What Every Claimant Should Know
Understanding your rights and the process can make a significant difference in the outcome of your claim.
Keep Your Bill of Lading
This is your moving contract and the most important document for any claim. Never discard it.
Document Damage Immediately
Photograph all damaged items before the movers leave. Note damage on the delivery receipt.
File Within 9 Months
Federal law requires claims to be filed within 9 months of delivery. Don't wait.
Know Your Coverage Type
Released value (60¢/lb) is free but minimal. Full value protection costs more but covers replacement.
Get an Inventory List
Request a copy of the movers' inventory list at pickup and verify it matches at delivery.
Verify the Carrier's DOT Number
Always confirm the moving company is FMCSA-registered before your move at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.
